Virginia Statewide Offices (Lt. Governor, Atty. General), 2005

Lieutenant Governor

For the second-highest office in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Senator Bill Bolling (R-VA 4th) from the south is up against former Senator Leslie Byrne (D-VA 34th) from the north. I mention regions only because Byrne is the only Northern Virginian running for any state-level office.

Fairfax County Bond Referendum, 2005

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is a very large school system. Sporting over 164,000 enrolled students, it is the largest system in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the twelfth largest in the United States. FCPS has over 200 schools—136 elementary, 22 middle, 4 secondary, 24 high, and 12 special education centers. The system has nearly 22,000 employees, 1,500 school busses, and (for FY2006) an operating budget of nearly 2 billion dollars.

Site Converted from Mambo to Joomla

There was some downtime this evening as I converted Off on a Tangent’s content management system from Mambo to Joomla. Joomla is a fork of the Mambo project which is developed by the same team that had previously developed Mambo. I consider Joomla 1.0 the most legitimate upgrade path from Mambo 4.5.2 (as opposed to the Mambo Foundation/Miro International releases that will continue under the Mambo name).

Bush Nominates Roberts for Chief Justice

President George W. Bush (R) today nominated John Roberts Jr. to become the next Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court following the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Roberts had previously been nominated to fill an associate justice vacancy left by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who announced her retirement in July. Roberts’s Senate confirmation hearings for that position were originally scheduled to begin tomorrow, and he was expected to be confirmed.
